CitiesDnepropetrovsk![]() (Dnipropetrovsk in Ukrainian and simply Dnepr for local inhabitants) is situated in the middle flow of Dnipro River in Central Ukraine. Population is 1,047 mln. of people (April, 2006). The center of Dneprovskaya agglomeration (Dnepropetrovsk, Dneprodzerzhynsk, Novomoskovsk, Podgornoye) – more than 1,3 mln. of people. The biggest center of Pridneproviye, one of the most beautiful cities of Ukraine. Permanent fortified city settlements are known since middle of 16 century. The new city was established in 1776, by Prince Grigoriy Potiomkin under the order of Catherine II and called Ekaterinoslav (it was called so in 1776-1926). In 1918, the name of city was Sicheslav in honor of Cossacks Sich. Since 1926, city is called Dnepropetrovsk. From the beginning of XX century and till today the city is the most important center of metallurgical industry and machine-building. Since 1950, it is the center of air and space-building industry. City is the main trade and industrial center of Eastern Ukraine. There are 11 state and some private higher educational establishments and a National University. Museums: Historical, Art, Literature, etc. Underground operated since 1995. There is an international airport. The length of quay along right bank of Dniper is more than 23 km. and its makes it the longest quay in Europe. ![]() Main facts: 1044 000 inhabitants in 2006; 1776 – year of city foundation; 48028’ of Northern latitude and 350 3’ of Eastern longitude are the geographic position data. It is the water level in Dnipro. 1791, is the year of the oldest of preserved buildings of the city, 8 and 10, Voroshylov street, were built. Potiomkinskyi Palace (1790) is also one of the oldest but reconstructed buildings.
