From the beginning Dontsk was Yuzovka because the founder of the city was John James Hughes. In Donbass they called him “Yuz”.

In 1924, Yuzovka was renamed into Stalino. For some weeks the name of the city was Trotsk, but there is few people now remember it.

Stalino was the center of Donetsk oblast (the name of oblast originated from Seversky Donets River). Than Donetsk oblast was split into Stalin and Lugansk oblasts (Lugansk was renamed into Voroshylograd and than back).

In 1961, Stalino was renamed into Donetsk and Stalin oblast became Donetsk oblast.

Today Donetsk is the city of oblast subordination and administrative center of Ukraine. Big industrial;, scientific and cultural center. It is a big junction of railroads, highways and airways. City is also famous for its outstanding sportsmen, winning first places at prestigious international competitions.

Donetsk is called one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine. It is the “city of million of roses”. And it is really so. Donetsk is considered to be the most “green” and highly industrial city of the world.

Area of buildings of the end of XIX – beginning of XX centuries. Voroshylovsky and Leninsky districts. About 20 entities and buildings where at the end of XIX – beginning of XX centuries lived the representatives of Yuzopvka merchants, businessmen, skilled workers of Yuzovka plant and representatives of English administration. There are some buildings of those times have been preserved: “Bratskaya School” (1880-1914) and the school for children of English administration.
