Yevpatoria

Yevpatoria is a curative city, city-worker and as it often happens in such cases the city tolerate to different religions. People of different nationalities and believes always live in peace here. Minarets of Khan-Jami Mosque aspire to the sky in the old part of the city at Revoluitsyiy Street. Crimea khans were presented to the people in the Mosque. Today Muslims come here to their God and the other people to enjoy mastery of ancient builders. There is an Orthodox St. Nikolai Cathedral at the same street 100 meters from the mosque. Built at the end of XIX century “by the whole community” in memory of warriors died in Crimea War of 1854-1856. It was restored at the end of XX century. Cathedral kenasa is not far from here. It is religious establishment of Karaite. Karaite is one of the native and the smallest nationality of Crimea. Near it, at the former Odun-bazar square, there is tekiye (monastery) of dervishes – unique architecture ensemble of XVI century, the only monument in Crimea representing Sufi direction in Islam. There are other historical monuments: Armenian Church of XIX century, operating synagogue, Greek Church of St. Prophet Ilya. All these are at the territory little more than 1,5 sq. km. By religious establishments allocation Yevpatoria has only Jerusalem! Aware people say that this place has a special aura. You can always feel yourself greatly here!

In IV century B.C. at the place of modern Yevpatoria Greek colonists founded Kerkinitida city state. The part of excavations you can see at the territory of Ministry of Defense Sanatorium, at the quay, in front of the entrance to the Regional Museum. At the museum – the building of Moorish style, you can see discoveries of archeologists: life things, arms and sculptures. Lapidariy – collection of stone statues is also here.

The heritage of Turkish times is Khan-Jami Mosque founded in 1552 by the great Oriental builder Mohamed Khadji Sinany, Tekiye of Dervishes – the monastery of traveling Muslim monks (followers of Sufi) built during XVI-XVIII centuries including mosque, tekiye and madrasah. XIX century presented city with complex Karaite kenase (cathedral and small temple, the yard of waiting).

Religious entities are also represented by St. Nikolai Cathedral, St. Ilya the Prophet Church and Greek Church. The first mad recreation center was opened in 1887, at the bank of Moynaki Lake. The monuments of architecture also are: S.E. Douvan house – the first city mayor, Executive Committee building and city library. There is a monument to marine paratroopers at 6 km of Yevpatoria-Sebastopol highway – heroes of Yevpatoria landing of 1943.
