Cities

Kharkov is an administrative center of Kharkov oblast, big industrial and cultural center, significant traffic center, the second city in Ukraine by population (2005 more than 1,45 mln. inhabitants).

The city is situated to the North-East of Ukraine in the valley of Kharkov, Lopan and Udi rivers. The area of the city is 300 sq.km and it is divided into 9 administrative districts:

• Mockovskyi
• Dzerzhynskyi
• Kominternovskyi
• Kyivskyi
• Frunzenskyi
• Leninskyi
• Oktiabrskyi
• Chervonozavodskoi
• Ordzhonikidzevskyi

There is metro in Kharkov. It consists of 3 lines with the length more than 33 km.

City is the big industrial center. Its machine-building is rather developed. There is Kharkov pTransportation Machine-building Plant, Tractor Plant, Metal-building Plant, Machinetool-building Plant, Electric plant, Aviation-building Plant, Turbine Plant, Bicycle Plant, Electric Cargo Machine Plant and others. There are enterprises of chemical industry, constructing materials, production of furniture, wood-processing, printing enterprises, food industry. There is also perfumery and cosmetic plant. There is also knitting, sewing, leather and shoes branches of light industry and a rope plant.

There are 30 higher education establishments in the city. The biggest are: Kharkov State University, Kharkov Polytechnic Institute and Kharkov State Medical Institute.

There is also astronomic observatory, 60 scientific and research institutes, more than 80 libraries, 5 museums, 21 cinemas, 6 theaters, circus, Palace of Sports, Palace of Water Kinds of Sports and 32 stadiums.
