Sudak

Blossoming valley goes down to the boundless blue sea surrounded by semi-circle of mountains which fantastic beauty you will remember forever. They guard Soudak valley from cold winds. Their intricate shapes are the first thing you mention when coming here by car or by boat from the sea. From East Soudak is guarded by Alchak-Kaya Cape which through grotto “Aeolus Harp” attracts you attention at the Western hill and Ai-Georgiy – St. George Mountain where you can find fragments of potter’s pipes of ancient water-pipe goes from the spring with crystal fresh spring water situated under the very top of the mountain. The Northern part is covered with Tartakash Mountain – “Stone Crest” allocated in Dachnoye village. There historical Tartakash treasure was discovered in 1908. There were more than 2 thousand of Roman and Bospor coins that is the evidence of trade and economic relations of ancient Sourozh with these states. Odd rock Beshiktash – “Frog-stone” is at the opposite side of Tartakash. In medieval the narrow area between these two mountains was protected with defense wall. The rest of it was there at the beginning of last century. There is Genoese Fortress is towering at Krepostnaya Mountain and Perchem Mountain – the highest of the mountains around Soudak - at the West side. Down at the foothill there is a cave where the Genoese water-pipe began and the spring with curative sulphury water.

The climate of Soudak is soft and mild. The summer is warm, but not hot. The quantity of cloudy days here are less than at the other resorts of Crimea. There only 84 per year by statistics. Swimming season lasts for 138 days and there is more sun in Soudak than it is in Yalta or at Azure Beach in Nice – 2550 hours per year (2220 in Yalta).

It is a great pleasure to have a walk around town. There are no steep raisings or descending. Curative air is the mixture of sea breezes and “spring” flows from mountains combining with Southern plants aroma will make your breath free and any moment you can have a rest in one of the bars or restaurants at the Kurortnaya lane and quay of the town. Wide beach stretches for more than three kilometers is covered with fine quartz sand and with grey and blue pebble at the water. There is no more at al Southern Coast of Crimea. If you suffer from radiculitis the sand bathes in the hot sand will help you to forget your suffer. Sea water is very pure here, the bottom of the sea is soft and smoothly descending. The average water temperature in June 18,70C, in July – 22,80C and in August – 22,50C.

Poets and painters like Soudak and environs. White neat houses, vine valleys go to the gauze of mountains, great silhouette of the ancient fortress, lanes of the parks and sunset at the sea will remind you pictures by I.A. Aivazovskyi (1817-1900), A.N. Benua (1870-1960), K.F. Bogayevskyi (1857-1909) and V.D. Polenov. In different times Soudak was visited by A.S. Griboyedov, N.A. Rimskyi-Korsakov, Alexei Tolstoi, Maximilian Voloshyn, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Grin, Konstantin Paustovskyi.
