TerritoryAllocation Ukraine allocates in the Central Eastern Europe in the South-Eastern part of the East European Plain between latitude 44’’20’ and 52’’20’ North and longitude 41’’15’ East. The geographic position of Ukraine is rather advantageous. Important transport roads linking Western Europe with Transcaucasian and Central Asia countries stretch through the territory of Ukraine.
Total area of Ukraine makes 603 700 square km. It equals 5.7% of the territory of Europe and 0.44% of world territory. Ukraine exceeds area of France (544 thousand sq. km), Spain (505 thousand sq. km), Sweden (450 thousand sq. km), Germany (356,3 thousand sq. km), Poland (312,7 thousand sq. km). Geographic center of Europe is at the territory of Ukraine not far from town of Rakhov in Zakarpattya oblast. This place was determined even in 1887, by specialists from Austro-Hungary. It is marked with the column and geodesic sign. There are words in Latin: “LOCUS PERENNI. Dilicentissime cum libella librationis guae est in Ausria and Hungaria confecta cum mensura gradum meridionalium et paralleloumierum Europeum. MD CCC LXXXVII». The translation means : « Constant, precise, eternal place. Very precisely, with the special apparatus made in Austrian and Hungary, with the scale of meridians and parallels, determined Center of Europe. 1887”. Neighbor Countries To the West Ukraine boarders Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, through the territory of which the shortest way lays connecting Ukraine with the countries of Western and Central Europe. To the East and North of Ukraine is the boarder with Russia, to the South-West – with Moldova and Romania. To the North Ukraine boarders Belarus which connects it to Baltic States. With Romania and Russia Ukraine has not only land border but marine boarder as well. Ukraine possesses the wide access to the Black Sea and Sea of Azov which connects it to Mediterranean countries. By sea Ukraine also boarders Republic of Bulgaria, Turkey and Georgia. The area of exclusive (marine) economic zone of Ukraine makes over 82 thousand sq. km. Odessa, Illichiovsk, Kherson, Sebastopol are the biggest Black Sea ports. Mariupol, Berdiansk and Kerch – are the biggest ports on Azov Sea. |
