The Golden Gate. It was erected by Yaroslav the Wise to be the gala entrance to the city. Nearby there is the monument dedicating to Yaroslav the Wise with model of Sophia Kievskaya on his hand.
Sophyivska square is the main square at the time of Yaroslav the Wise's ruling. The erection of Sophia Kievskaya was the action to show the power of Kievskaya Rus. The graves of Yaroslav the Wise and his wife Irina are located here. Sofiya Kievskaya used to be a library.
In 1990 Sophia Kievskaya was included into UNESCO's list of international heritage.
Myhailovsky cathedral was founded by Prince Svyatopolk (Myhayl). There had been the remains of holy Varvara, which were transferred to Vladymyrsky cloister after the destruction. During 1997-2000 Myhailovsky cathedral was rebuilt.
Khreschatyk Street is the main street of Kiev. Independent square is situated nearby and is the place for repose and entertainment. Every weekend it converts into the pedestrian area. There is the underground trade mall "Globus" with lots of cozy cafes.
The monument to Volodymyr who had baptized Kyiv Rus is situated on Volodymyrskyi hill. Rushing through the old park you stumble across the funicular-tram (3 carriages) which can lift you down and up to Volodymyrskyi hill. Going down you meet the charms of Podol, the historical district, where merchants and craftsmen used to live during the time of Kievskaya Rus. Loads of exquisite churches, Florovsky convent, the river moorage, market and variety of fascinating buildings can be observed wandering along narrow streets of this district. Poshtova square is the place where the first post department was built. Dnipro embankment, monument to Kiev founders, Paton bridge, monument Rodina-Mat (Homeland-Mother), the National Memorial Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 (without visiting), stop to take photos, Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra Monastery (without visiting), Feodosya Pecherskaya church (without visiting), Spasa church, the burial place of Yury Dolgorukyi, the park of Glory, Maryinskyi park, the building of Supreme Soviet (Verhovna Rada) of Ukraine, the building of Cabinet Ministry of Ukraine, European square, the Ukrainian House, Khreschatyk, Bessarabskyi market, the square of Lev Tolstoy, T.G.Shevchenko National University, park named after T.G. Shevchenko.
