Till the beginning of 1994 this defense base had 176 missile complexes, which were armed with 130 missiles type PC-18 (CC-19) and 46 missiles type PC-22 (CC-24) with 1272 nuclear warheads. In addition, Ukraine had 2500 units of tactical nuclear weapons.
Between 1988 and 1991 all missiles were eliminated. On the 46th base it was offered by Americans to create a museum. And it was done!
This museum is located around 300 km south from Kyiv. The trip starts in Kyiv. The driver and guide will meet you and take you to the missile defense base. The excursion consists of 2 stages: introduction about a history of military forces inside and outside the museum and visiting of underground command post. It will take 2 hours. All guides are former military men who served at this base.
The high light of the trip is being a descent 33 m down to the bottom of the Unified Launch Control Center!
You can take an underground corridor to the massive doors which lead to a self-contained silo-based 12-storey Command Post which could function sealed from the outside world for 45 days.
Sit in the Command seat and experience what Soviet officers could feel during the Cold War and being in charge of nine missiles SS-22. You can touch the button that could cause a catastrophe if pressed 18 years ago.
Look inside SS-18 'Satan' Intercontinental Ballistic Missile - equipped with up to 10 warheads and 40 penaids - it used to give Soviet Union "first strike" advantage over the U.S. - it's operating range 10,200-15,200 km, Weight 209,600 kg (462,000 lb) Length 32.2 m (106 ft) Diameter 3.05 m (10.0 ft).
